The Birth of Donburi
1600s
Donburi, meaning “rice bowl” in Japanese, originated in the Edo period as a hearty meal for the working class, easy to eat on the go. The first donburi, una-don (grilled eel over rice), quickly gained popularity and different variations of this humble rice bowl soon followed such as the classic gyudon (beef bowl), which is thinly sliced beef and onions cooked in a sweet-savory sauce, served over rice.
Today, donburi is a staple in Japan, known for its versatility, affordability, and flavor, and is enjoyed worldwide as quick, traditional Japanese comfort food.
